Halloween on a Friday! What could be sweeter than that? How about a Challah-ween?
That's right -- nothing screams Halloween like a Halloween Candy Challah (click for recipe)! Are we nuts to allow our toddlers to have candy in their challah before we even go out to trick-or-treat? Apparently so...and even worse, we allowed them to have ice-cream filled cupcakes to help Cherry celebrate her birthday! Note: we do not recommend this on a normal basis.
Our day was busy! Mommy actually made the challah dough the night before so Derek and Joshua wouldn't have to wait for the dough to rise (hours long process). In the morning, Grandma dropped off their brand new personally crafted aprons and we began making the challot. We did this early in the morning so the bread would have time to bake and so we could make it to Derek and Joshua's doctor's appointment (4 year and 2 year check-ups already)! Of course, they tasted all of the glory before their appointment!

The trick to the candy-filled challah is to flatten each strand of the braid, place crushed chocolaty candy on each strand, and then pinch the ends together and re-roll before braiding. Every time Mommy put candy on the strand, Josh would pick it up and eat it! Mommy had to quickly stuff his challah (hence the reason we do not have any pictures with the actually candy!). Here he is looking underneath the strand for more candy! Derek did a great job of doing this on his own (eating and stuffing). Once Josh saw Derek had more candy, we had to keep on moving the candy bowl from one side of Derek to the next while Josh ran back and forth trying to get more!!!

Derek was so brave! He had two shots and did not even cry (and that DPT booster is no joke)! Josh cried for about 30 seconds and then was fine.
All of the boys fell asleep in the way home:

At each house Josh would be handed a piece of candy. He would then hand the entire bag to Mommy or Daddy and hold up the single piece of candy and say, "Opie up!" Every. Single. House. Every. Single. Time. So cute!
